Firefighters Extricate Driver Pinned In Head-On LI Crash: FD

The crash took place Wednesday in Hampton Bays, officials say.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — Firefighters rushed to the scene of a head-on crash in Hampton Bays Wednesday, officials said.

The crash took place at about 8:24 a.m. a quarter mile north of Old Riverhead Road, the Hampton Bays Fire Department said.

When they arrived at the scene, firefighters saw that one person had self-extricated; in the second car the vehicle took the full impact on the driver's side, pinning the driver, the HBFD said.

"Because of the extent of the damage and injury, both doors, the B post and roof needed to be removed to safely remove the patient," the HBFD said.

Firefighters had multiple heavy rescue tools in operation simultaneously to expedite access for first responders under the supervision of Capt. Jon Stanton and Lt. Mike Sauter. Fire police and traffic control officers had Route 24 shut down in both directions for more than an hour, the fire department said.
