Hampton Bays High School Athletes Vault To New Heights, Set Records

HAMPTON BAYS, NY —Five Hampton Bays High School winter track and field athletes soared to new heights recently and made their hometown proud.

The athletes set new school records while competing at the 2022 Bishop Loughlin Games at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island on Dec. 18.

Matthew Papajohn broke the 300-meter dash record set in 2021 with a time of 37.07, beating out the previous record of 37.48, the district said.

Joffre Proano set a new record for the pole vault with an 11-foot jump, surpassing the 2003 record of 10 feet, 6 inches, the district added.

Also setting a new record was the 4x200-meter relay team made up of Elijah Amos, Charlie Garcia, Papajohn and Liam Sutton, who completed the race in 1:37.11. The previous record was 1:40.22 in 2019, the district said.
