Hampton Bays Wrestling Coach on 'Administrative Leave' After Drug Charges: Superintendent

Paul Hoshyla is on leave "pending the outcome of this legal matter," Hampton Bays School Superintendent Lars Clemensen said.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — A Hampton Bays High School wrestling coach is on "administrative leave" after being arrested and charged with drug possession, said Hampton Bays Superintendent Lars Clemensen.

Police say Paul Hoshyla, 52, was arrested on Nov. 30 on Flanders Road around 6 p.m. and was found to have heroin on the passenger seat of his car; he was later found with Xanax in his pocket, according to Southampton Police Lt. James Kiernan.

Hoshyla was charged with two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanors, and one count of possession of a controlled substance not in its original container, a violation, according to Kiernan.

Hoshyla "has been involved with the wrestling program since 2003 as an assistant coach. In 2015, he was appointed head coach," Clemensen told Patch.

"At this time, Mr. Hoshyla is on administrative leave pending the outcome of this legal matter. Our assistant coach, Mike Lloyd, is assuming the responsibilities of head coach as the wrestling season is starting to really gear up with activity at this time. The safety and well-being of our students is the top priority of the Hampton Bays Public Schools."
