Kids Learn Life Lessons About Good Citizenship

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — It's never to early to embrace the principles of good citizenship.
To that end, Westhampton Beach Elementary School second-graders are gaining an understanding of good citizenship as part of the school’s comprehensive Wonders Reading and writing program.
Most recently, the students in Heidi Kalmus’ class spent an afternoon reading a story about a boy who found a video game that belonged to someone else and his “difficult decision” to return it to the rightful owner. In groups and individually, students then wrote responses to the text that explored the meaning of good citizenship, the district said.

Discussing what she learned through the lesson, student Elizabeth Sultan said, “If you are kind to others, they will be kind to you and appreciate you.”
