Local Children Build Oyster Cages to Help Improve Water Quality

Little children, doing big things.

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — Children are learning critical life lessons and doing their part in saving the environment.

As part of a lesson on local ecosystems, Westhampton Beach Elementary School first-graders recently helped construct oyster cages with the assistance of representatives of the Moriches Bay Project, the district said.

The oyster cages will be placed in the bay, with an eye toward fostering the Moriches Bay Project’s mission to improve the area’s water quality through oyster farming and eelgrass planting, district officials added.
