Long Island Hate Groups: Map Shows Active Racist Organizations

After a white nationalist gathering in Charlottesville sparked violence Saturday, resulting in the death of an anti-racism protester and collective national outrage, the Southern Poverty Law Center is reminding Americans that organized hate isn't a thing of the past — and that racism is alive and well in communities across Long Island.

The SPLC says nearly 1,000 organizations that meet its criteria for being designated a hate group are currently active nationwide.

In New York State, there are 47 active hate groups, with two on Long Island, one in Hampton Bays and one in Hempstead, according to the SPLC — ranging from white supremacists to anti-LGBTQ, anti-Muslim and black separatist organizations.

The SPLC website has an interactive map showing the location of hate groups state by state.

After Saturday's violence, crowds gathered on the East End Sunday to stand strong against violence and share messages of unity in Greenport and Sag Harbor.

The nation paid tribute to Heather Heyer, the woman killed when a vehicle plowed into a crowd of anti-racist protesters. Two Virginia state troopers were also killed in a helicopter crash near the site of the "Unite the Right" demonstration in Charlottesville.

Many have maintained that racism has long been alive and well on Long Island, with protestors gathering to fight back in East End rallies in recent years.
