Snow, Sleet, Freezing Rain to Impact Tuesday Evening Commute

Winter showing no signs of letting up.

A three-day wintry mess of snow, sleet and rain on Long Island is set to begin on Tuesday.

The Nassau Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for all of Long Island that goes into effect at 3 p.m. Tuesday and runs until 2 a.m. Wednesday.

The NWS is predicting 2-3 inches of snow for almost of Long Island by the end of Tuesday night. Parts of the South Fork may see 1-2 inches. Less than a tenth of an inch of ice may also accumulate across the region.

Snow will develop late Tuesday afternoon and then mix with sleet and freezing rain in the evening before changing to freezing rain by midnight. The precipitation will change to plain rain overnight into Wednesday.

Rain is expected all day Wednesday before more wintry weather arrives Wednesday night. That storm has the potential to dump more than 6 inches snow on the island, the NWS said in a hazardous weather outlook issued for the region. Snow will remain likely through Thursday afternoon.

The full forecast:

  • Today- Snow likely, mainly after 5pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. Light and variable wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
  • Tonight- Snow, freezing rain, and sleet before 10pm, then rain and sleet between 10pm and 11pm, then rain after 11pm. Temperature rising to around 38 by 2am. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. South wind 9 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.
  • Wednesday- Rain, mainly before 1pm. High near 42. Wind chill values between 30 and 35. West wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
  • Wednesday Night- Rain before 1am, then snow and sleet between 1am and 4am, then snow after 4am. Low around 28. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. West wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.
  • Thursday- Snow, mainly before 4pm. Temperature falling to around 26 by 1pm. North wind 11 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.
  • Thursday Night- A chance of snow, mainly before 7pm. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 12. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
  • Friday- Sunny, with a high near 27.
