Bayview’s STEAM Bin Proves A Source For Creativity
Bayview Elementary School third-graders used materials in the STEAM bin to design and build many creations.

WEST ISLIP, NY - From West Islip Public Schools: Delving into the school’s STEAM bin boxes, third-graders at West Islip’s Bayview Elementary School were hard at work designing, building and writing about their many creations.
Play-Doh and toothpicks in one box were used to make a ramp. Another held index cards and tape, which the students used to try to build the tallest structure possible. Yet another box contained popsicle sticks and velcro, used to construct a bridge. The final box was filled with Unifix cubes. Asked to create a toy or game with these cubes, the group made toy spiders.
“They were so creative and drawn into the tasks, it was hard to tear them away from it,” said teacher Maria Lucie.
