Coronavirus In West Islip: Latest Numbers, Updates

Here are the latest local updates on how the coronavirus outbreak is impacting West Islip and its surrounding areas.

WEST ISLIP, NY — The coronavirus outbreak is continuing to spread across the country and especially on Long Island. On Saturday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that Long Island is a hot spot for the new coronavirus. The pandemic has affected several aspects of daily life for local residents including the closure of schools and many businesses. The number of cases of the illness caused by the virus, known as COVID-19, continue to rise and additional measures and closures continue to be announced.

On Monday, Cuomo extended his order all for nonessential workers to stay home, known as NY PAUSE, until April 29. Nonessential businesses will also remain closed during that time.

SCHOOLS

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone first closed all schools for two weeks on March 15. On Monday, Gov. Cuomo announced that all schools across New York will remain closed until April 29.

HOSPITALS

Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center was singled out by Gov. Cuomo as a hot spot for the new coronavirus.

The hospital is "prepared and has implemented prevention and control protocols to appropriately isolate patients who enter our facilities to prevent the potential transmission of infection and protect you. All clinical personnel are educated on the latest CDC and New York State Department of Health coronavirus guidelines and recommendations," according to its website.

The visitor policy has also been updated for the hospital. All visitation has been suspended, except for end-of-life, newborn delivery and pediatrics, at all Catholic Health Services hospitals and skilled nursing facilities.

The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation is currently accepting donations for its Crisis Response Fund.

CANCELLATIONS/CLOSURES

The Diocese of Rockville Centre announced that all funerals, weddings and other services at Catholic churches across Long Island are canceled. Earlier in the month, the Diocese said all masses for a month — including all Holy Week and Easter services — would be canceled due to the coronavirus.

Town of Islip officials announced on Monday that town offices on 655 Main Street (Town Hall), 401 Main Street (Town Hall West) as well as the offices in 40 Nassau Avenue and 50 Irish Lane (Brookwood Hall), will be closed to the general public. Constituent services can be reached by calling 631-224-5380. Senior Centers closed until further notice, however, essential Senior Citizen services will continue, including at home meal delivery and transportation to doctors appointments. Seniors who use Senior Centers for meals may request home delivery by calling 631-224-5340.

Traffic Violations conference scheduled for April 6 have been canceled. The Town's Planning Board meeting scheduled for Thursday has been canceled. There will be no animal adoptions for 2 weeks, effective Monday. Donations will still be accepted. For Lost Dogs, call 631-224-5660.

All programs, classes, concerts and the exhibit at the Islip Art Museum are canceled until further notice.
