Driver Charged With DWI After West Islip Crash That Seriously Injures Bicyclist

A 54-year-old woman is in serious condition following crash Saturday night, police say.

WEST ISLIP, NY - A 43-year-old man was arrested on a DWI charge following a crash that seriously injured a woman who was riding a bicycle in West Islip Saturday night, police said.

According to police, Thomas Sitone, of Brightwaters, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck west on the Sunrise Highway North Service Road when he struck Clemencia Mennella, 54, who was riding a bicycle north on Manor Lane.

Mannella was transported by West Islip Rescue to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where she was listed in serious condition with multiple bone fractures, police said.

Sitone was charged with DWI and was held overnight at the Third Precinct. He is scheduled to be arraigned Sunday morning at First District Court in Central Islip.

Sitone’s vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
