Is Eli the Problem?

After throwing 7 interceptions in two games it would be easy to say that Eli Manning is the reason for the Giants poor start at 0 – 2.   However, a closer look at the way the first two games have been played would quickly refute that perception.

Eli has been prone to throwing interceptions since he entered the league.  The reason for this is that Eli is not a “dink and dunk” type of quarterback.   He is not a game manager.  Eli is a play maker.  Eli takes risks. For the Giants to be successful Eli has to throw the ball down the field.  This can often lead to interceptions.

In both games this season the Giants have been behind.  Playing catch up means throwing more passes.  Often deep passes.  So far this season the Giants have attempted 91 passes to only 33 runs.  With those 91 attempts Eli has thrown for 812 yards, one yard short of the league leader. He is ranked fourth in the league in yards per attempt.  The Giants are eighth in the league in scoring, averaging 27 points per game.  At the same time, the Giants defense has given up a league high 38 .5 points per game.

No, Eli is not the problem.  To be successful the Giants need to find a way to shut down their opponents and allow Eli more time to run the offense.  The offensive line needs to open holes for the running backs, who at present have less rushing yards (73) than opponents have points (77).  Unless the Giants improve these two areas of their game it is going to be a long season…
