Nineteen fifth graders at West Islip’s Manetuck Elementary School recently participated in the Veterans of Foreign War Illustrate America art contest, in which students were challenged to create visual representations of America.

The entire grade voted to select three winners, with Daniel Newsom finishing first and Makayla Mooney and Alyssa Webster as runners up. The entries were then submitted to the Veterans of Foreign War’s Long Island Region for judging and display at veterans’ homes and hospitals throughout Long Island.
