Yesterday’s Manning Bowl turned out to be a one-sided dud. Big brother Peyton gave little brother Eli a spanking. As a result, the Broncos remain undefeated while the Giants remain winless. The Giants fought hard to play with the Broncos the first two quarters and were only down by one at the intermission. However they could not keep up with the high paced Broncos in the second half, finally losing 41-23.
Most years, at 0 – 2, the Giants would be in serious trouble. Teams that have started out the season losing the first two games only have a 12% chance to make the playoffs. Still, there is no stand out team in the NFC East so the Giants are not dead. Right now they are tied with the Redskins and a game behind the Cowboys and Eagles. Also they are about to begin a soft part of their schedule.
Even so, they do have some parts of their game that needs improvement: The offensive line needs to block better and open some holes for the running backs. The receivers and backs must learn how to hold onto the ball. Eli has to make better decisions and stop forcing plays. The defense needs sharper coverage of opposing receivers while improving the pass rush to put pressure on the opposing quarterback. The next few weeks will determine if the Giants can reestablish themselves as contenders.
