Police: Drunken Driver Flees After Hitting Pedestrian in Central Islip

Alejandro Diaz is arrested soon after crash early Friday.

A Brentwood man faces a DWI charge after he struck a pedestrian in Central Islip early Friday morning, police said.

According to police, Alejandro Diaz, 33, was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck east on Suffolk Avenue, 40 feet east of Bergen Street, at 3:03 a.m. when his vehicle veered off the road and struck Mark Pamphile, who was walking east on the sidewalk.

Diaz fled the scene and was arrested a short time later a short distance from the crash, police said.

Pamphile, 22, of Central Islip, was transported by ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with serious injuries.

Diaz is charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident with serious Injury. He will be held overnight at the Third Precinct and is scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday.
