Three letters threatening violence have been sent to the Long Island Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) Services Network within the past 18 months, with the latest letter arriving at its Bay Shore community center on Thursday, police said.
Suffolk County Police Hate Crimes Unit detectives are investigating and police are asking for the public’s help to find the person or people responsible for sending the letters.
The latest letter, addressed to CEO David Kilmnick, was sent to the Bay Shore center at 34 Park Avenue, police said. The Long Island GLBT Network operates three community centers, with other locations in Woodbury and Sag Harbor.

“These threatening letters are a reminder that despite advances in GLBT equality, homophobia and hate still exist and are very much alive,” Kilmnick wrote in a letter. “We must remain vigilant in our efforts to ensure Long Island is a safe and welcoming place for all GLBT people and families.”
Police are asking anyone with information about the people responsible to call the Hate Crimes Unit at 631-852-6181 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
