Street Renaming Ceremony Honors West Babylon Hero

The ceremony renamed a portion of Manhattan Avenue on behalf of a local resident who sacrificed his life during a battle in Vietnam in 1970.

WEST BABYLON, NY - Town of Babylon recently hosted a renaming ceremony in West Babylon to honor a local fallen hero.

The ceremony was in remembrance of US Army PFC Salvatore Joseph Armato, who was killed during a battle in Quand Ngal Province in Vietnam in 1970 at only 20 years old.

To honor him, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Terence McSweeney renamed part of Manhattan Avenue between Little East Neck Road and Hampton Road on Armato's behalf.

Armato’s siblings, extended family members and friends also attended at the ceremony, which was held less than 50 yards from the home where he grew up and lived until he sacrificed his life.

In addition, New York State Assemblyman Mike LiPetri, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, members of the West Babylon VFW and Lions Club and event organizer Thomas Lano were also in attendance.
