Talk is Cheap

As captain of the defense you should expect Antrel Rolle to try and motivate his teammates, but saying that the Giants could win the next 12 games sounds like he has spent the last few days in Fantasy Land.  Coach Tom Coughlin, in anticipation of a hostile home crowd, has requested fans be “boisterous and supportive” during Sunday’s home matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.  Surely, both comments were made with the hope the struggling Giants players gain some much needed confidence.

However, before the Giants can even think about running the table they first need to win a game.  They need to play better in all phases; offense, defense and special teams.  They also need to coach better.  Fan support will follow better play.

Strange as it may be, at 0 – 4 the Giants are not out of the race for the division crown.  None of the teams have as yet jumped far ahead in the NFC East.  With a win this weekend along with a Dallas loss to Denver, the Giants would be just one game out of the division lead.  But of course neither a Giants win nor a Cowboy loss is a sure thing.

Come Sunday the Giants need to be more creative in their play calling, both on offense and on defense.  The offensive line must get a push off the scrimmage and open some holes for the running backs.  Running backs should run hard and not dance into the line.  Wide receivers need to catch balls thrown to them.  The defensive front four have to get penetration into the backfield.  Linebackers must react quickly to plays.  And the defensive back cannot allow receivers to roam the secondary uncovered.

Actions not words are what the Giants need most in order to restore confidence…
