Town of Islip Declares State of Emergency, Cars Must Be Parked Off Roadways
Town supervisor urges residents to refrain from driving.

The Town of Islip is under a state of emergency due to a snowstorm that has so far dropped up to 6 inches of snow across the Town.
Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter signed the state of emergency order and she urged residents to stay off the roadways.
“Public works crews will work around the clock to clear roadways,” Carpenter said. “We strongly recommend that residents refrain from driving, if possible, so that plows can operate more efficiently. We also remind residents to keep cars off of the roads, so that plowing crews can better service our neighborhoods.”

The Town’s inventory of snow removal equipment and vehicles has been deployed, along with all of its private vendors, in response to the current hazardous conditions on the roadways, town officials said. Plowing, salting and sanding operations have been underway since early Thursday morning and will continue throughout the night.
Town code also stipulates that each owner or occupant of any house or other building, any owner of any vacant lot, and any person having charge of a church or any public building in the Town shall keep sidewalks in front of the lots, buildings or houses, free from obstruction by snow or ice and icy conditions. This code also prohibits depositing snow on any street, whether from driveways and/or sidewalks.
Any weather related calls should be made to the Department of Public Works at 631-224-5600. Power outages and downed power lines should be reported directly to PSEG’s customer complaint line at 1-800-490-0075.
Long Island is under a winter weather advisory until 7 p.m. Thursday. The National Weather Service says an additional inch of snow is possible by that time.
