West Islip High School's Class of 2016 Valedictorian, Salutatorian Announced

West Islip High School’s Class of 2016 valedictorian and salutatorian are James Khoury and Hannah Kim, respectively, the district announced on Tuesday. 

An AP Scholar with Distinction, Khoury earned the title of valedictorian with a weighted GPA of 106.2446​. He won the American Chemical Society Outstanding Achievement in Chemistry award and was chosen for the elite American Legion Boys State program. He is a member of the school’s National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Foreign Language Honor Society and Mathletes.

An accomplished All-County and All-State musician, he is a drum major, member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and pit orchestra, co-founder of the West Islip Brass Quintet, and performer in the National Youth Orchestra of New York. Khoury will attend Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he will major in foreign service.

Kim, also an AP Scholar with Distinction and outstanding musician, had a weighted GPA of 105.8261. She is a member of West Islip’s National Honor Society and National English Honor Society. She won the Future Physicians and Medical Sciences Award of Excellence, the SUNY Stony Brook Center for Science and Mathematics Education Award of Excellence, the Suffolk Science Teachers’ Association of New York Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award, a silver medal in environmental management and sustainability for I-SWEEEP and a second-place NYSSEF science award.

A Tri-M Music Honor Society and pit orchestra member, she was named an All-County, All-State, All-Eastern and All-National musician and participated in the New York Philharmonic’s Face the Music program. Kim will attend Syracuse University’s honors program, majoring in biochemistry.
