American Cancer Society Honors Westchester Volunteers
Local residents volunteer to ensure cancer patients get information and rides to treatment.

As we approach National Volunteer Week (April 15-21, 2018) the American Cancer Society recognizes and celebrates the efforts of its 1.5 million volunteers nationwide – and across Westchester County -- who are making a difference in the fight against cancer, while seeking passionate, dedicated individuals to join the volunteer force and help save more lives from cancer.
A recognition event was held Friday, April 13th, 2018 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center-West Harrison to honor Cancer Resource Volunteers, Look Good Feel Better Volunteers and others who have drove hundreds of miles over the last year to ensure Westchester residents got to their cancer treatment.
“Accomplishments in curing cancer would not be possible without the dedication of thousands of essential volunteers across Fairfield County,” said Monica Garrigan, Director of Community Engagement. “We celebrate all volunteers from every corner of our organization. Because of their effort we can continue our mission to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer,” she added.

Road To Recovery Volunteers
More than 40 percent of transportation requests are unmet due to the growing need for patient transportation, according to the Society. Volunteer drivers are needed across the County. The American Cancer Society screens and trains all volunteer drivers, coordinates the rides through an online app, and volunteer drivers can provide as many rides – or as few -- as they can every few months. To learn more visit www.cancer.org/ride.
