Area Rug Cleaning - Having Cleaning Done On-Site vs. Sending Them Out

Many customers have an investment in area rugs. They’re told they can be cleaned on-site by some companies, and others advise sending them out.

In general, the decision rests on two primary factors: The condition of the rug and its value. However, at times the construction of the rug might require special processing such as blocking where the rug is held under tension to avoid ripples. Or the rug needs to be sent out because it has lost its symmetrical shape and needs to be resized to get it “squared”.

The condition is a big factor. If the rug needs normal maintenance and there aren’t any real issues, on-site is a great alternative as it is less costly since there is no pick-up and delivery, wrapping or plant overhead. You can expect to save 50-65%. However, if the rug is saturated and contaminated with pet urine or there are mildew odors from incorrect storage, they need to be sent out to a dedicated plant. Washing them thoroughly is required to release the contaminants.

Value is also important. If the rug is inexpensive, the cost of sending a rug out can be significant in relation to the value. Similarly, if the problem is repetitive, and we see this unfortunately with a lot of older pets, the costs can mount by constantly sending them out. This becomes an economical decision. However, mishaps by small animals might not be critical so cleaning them on-site often does the job.

Lastly, merely being advised to send rugs out begs certain questions. Where and how is the rug being processed? If a rug cleaning company is merely duplicating the same process of cleaning as it would on-site, there most likely is little or no extra value. So it’s important to ask where the rug is being processed, and if it is being done in a dedicated plant, preferably with a washing pit in which the rug is submerged in water and cleaned? A customer should know this before spending considerably more money.
