Artist Asks Local Community Members to Share Memories

From November 7-12, Mamaroneck Artists Guild will present an audio and visual art installation that allows participants and audiences to experience, read and share one another’s memories. Artist Christine Shannon Aaron’s community-based exhibition, The Memory Project, invited anyone who lives in, works in, or has ties to Larchmont and Mamaroneck to share their memories, which were then written or recorded. The shared memories resulted in several audiovisual art installations. For instance, one installation includes submissions that were written on strips of specialty paper and then coated in wax and hung in a “waterfall of memories.” Another weaves pieces of audio to which visitors can listen. While many memories submitted were not related to the towns, these submissions did thread a common needle among those involved. Memories included myriad emotions and experiences, from a summer camp to a war, and from a newborn baby to a death. On November 7, visitors can meet the artist and add a memory of their own for inclusion in an online archive; an opening reception will take place on November 11; and during a “walk and talk” on November 12, Aaron will discuss her creative process and how the project came about.
