I was in NYC several times recently to take in the live shows of several bands. I really liked two of them and decided to write about the good music I’ve been experiencing. I want to share it with those not lucky enough to live close to where they are playing. Take a look at their YouTube videos and I think you’ll be blown away by them.
Sebadoh is a band that I have been following for a few years. They were a break out from the band Dinosaur Jr. The base player, Lou Barlow went out and started this new, very cool indie/rock band. They could be considered “low-fi” (which is a style of indie rock characterized by low-fidelity recording techniques). The band members of Sebadoh write a lot of songs; while I am not that crazy about some, others are pure poetry. They are definitely worth seeing live.
I also saw Gary Clark Jr. at Terminal 5 in NYC a few weeks ago and he blew the roof off that place! The crowd was very age diverse. Everyone was brought together to listen to some fantastic music. I heard that his Apollo Theater show the night before was just as great. He is an excellent rock/blues guitarist from Austin, Texas. He’s played with the likes of Clapton, Dave Matthews, and Ron Wood, to name just a few. If some of the best guitar players are asking Gary Clark, Jr. to sit in with them, he must be great.

It was very hard to get tickets for Gary Clark Jr.’s show. As soon as I heard he would be playing in NYC, I jumped online for one of the last tickets. There have been many people comparing him to Jimmy Hendrix, because his style is so extraordinary. Even if you are not a musician, you know that how he plays is special. He just seems to be able to go with the flow, drawing the audience in as he plays on. He really seems to enjoy himself on stage and that just lifts the audience. If you like blues guitar with a rock twist, Gary Clark Jr. is someone you need to see! Check out his Youtube videos like this one for Bright Lights or his live concert with John Mayer sitting in.
I welcome any comments or recommendations for artists that I should go see.
