The College of Westchester Congratulates Prof. Andy Capellan

The Institute for Latino Studies (ILS) recently hosted their annual gala, “Illustrious Awards 2017”, honoring outstanding Latinos from different careers. Among this selected group was CW’s Prof. Andy Capellan. The ceremony took place at the Paul Robeson Campus Center at Rutgers University in Newark, NJ.
The Illustrious Awards Ceremony, a signature initiative of The Institute for Latino Studies, documents and highlights the contributions of Tri-State Area Latinos to the advancement of the United States of America. The contributions of Latino icons are video-featured and honored in a professionally produced formal ceremony. Nomination of candidates is made by boards of education, institutions of higher learning, professional associations/organizations, chambers of commerce, community organizations, government institutions, and the general public in fifteen areas: Arts, Business & Entrepreneurship, Education, Television & Entertainment, Drama & Film, Government, Social Sciences, Judiciary & Law Enforcement, Leadership, Literature, Politics, Military, Natural Sciences, and Sports. “When I realized what this was all about, it dawned on me that I have accomplished a great deal being a man of Latino descent. In addition, quite often, I think I am striving to help my community with no one watching, but I was wrong, people do take note and appreciate the work and accomplishments of individuals. Something that is truly needed when you are a service provider. Every now and then you need a pat on the back for a job well done,” said Andy.
CW’s Andy Capellan is a retired Public School High School Administrator and football coach. Currently, he is a professor at The College of Westchester. Andy grew up in Washington Heights in upper Manhattan, and he is the son of a Dominican single mother. Andy is the Girls Track Coach at New Rochelle High School, where he has devoted his life to develop his students into the most successful girls high school track team program in American history. Coach Capellan enters his 37th year at New Rochelle HS where he compiled an outstanding record as the Head Girls Track and Field Coach. His girls team won the League title 54 times, the County Championship 48 and the Sectional Championship for Section One Class Z on 38 occasions. Over the years, he has produced a countless number of New York State and National Champions.
