Coronavirus: Westchester Deaths Reach 743

There's been no decision whether the beaches and pools will open on time.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — With the reopening of two county golf courses, Westchester County Executive George Latimer said hiking and bicycling trails will continue to be open, but no decision has been made about opening the beaches and pools for the summer. He said the decision will be made depending on whether the action reduces the spread of the new coronavirus or increases the spread.

Latimer said, as his Monday news conference, that, as much as having the beaches and pools open on hot days is desirable, he said he cannot imagine being able to maintain social distancing.

Glen Island Park in New Rochelle will likely be closed to the public into the summer, Latimer said, because of the drive-thru testing center that has been in place since March 13.

"I think it's a great asset to the county," Latimer said, "but it is very difficult to know how to open Playland" and keep everyone healthy.

He said if it opens at all it will be in the month of June.

Latimer said, as of Sunday, there have been 23,803 positive cases of the new coronavirus in Westchester County. He said there are slightly more than 10,000 active cases, meaning 13,000 people had tested positive but have since recovered.

The number of new coronavirus-related hospitalizations for the county is now 1,089. There have been a total of 743 deaths since the beginning about seven weeks ago.

Latimer said there was a 3 percent fatality rate for those who contracted the virus.

Regarding numbers of new coronavirus cases by community, the largest cities continue to have the most cases: Yonkers, 3,878; New Rochelle, 1,700; Mount Vernon, 1,655; and White Plains 1,008.

Below is a map of the confirmed numbers of cases as of April 20.
