A Billion Acts of Green

Planet Earth will be the star of the second annual Earth Day  celebration hosted by the SWBOCES Center  for Career Services in Valhalla.

The public is invited to attend the outdoor show, titled "A Billion Acts of Green," on Friday, May 13.

Exhibits featuring some exciting ways to go green will be on display from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Career Services campus located at 65 Grasslands Road, Valhalla.

Among the exhibits will be: 

  • A General Motors electric car and hydrogen vehicle.
  •  A presentation by Sobeida Cruz from the New York Power Authority, who will speak about energy efficiency and conservation and have a hybrid vehicle available to view.
  •  Laurie Gershgon, owner of Healthy Culinary Creations, will do a healthy cooking demo.
  •  Frank Mascetta, SWBOCES Electrical Construction teacher, will demonstrate how solar panels work.
  • Carpentry students will show small scale models of a green technology/renewable energy house they have built.
  •  Fashion Design & Merchandising students will display their recycled wedding gowns creations.
  • SWBOCES teacher Tom Burgess will be collecting used cell phones for recycling.
  • Computer Electronics and Robotics Technology teacher Joe Passaretti will talk about the benefits of recycling computers and their parts.
  • Ornamental Horticulture students will be giving away seedlings to encourage gardening.
  • Students in the Culinary Arts program will make and serve healthy smoothies.
  • Students in the Cosmetology program will have literature and samples of makeup and beauty products made from natural ingredients.
  • A video about renewing the earth created by students in the TV & Video Production program will run throughout the day.
  • Posters made by students in the Commercial Art and Integrated Art programs will depict different ways to honor the earth and the environment.
  • The school's vegetable garden, started last year, will be replanted.
