The legal profession has changed rapidly over the past three decades with the introduction of the Internet and social networking, and other advances in technology. Yet the American Bar Association (ABA) Model Rules of Professional Conduct for attorneys has been updated only twice since its creation in 1983. With this in mind, in 2009, then-ABA President Carolyn B. Lamm convened the Commission on Ethics 20/20 to bring the Model Rules into the 21st century.
Justice Elizabeth Lacy, Senior Justice on the Virginia Supreme Court and a member of the ABA Commission on Ethics 20/20, will lay out the key issues being discussed by the Commission, and how potential changes could impact lawyers, when she delivers the 21st annual Philip B. Blank Memorial Lecture on Legal Ethics at Pace Law School on November 10.
The rules under review by the Commission include those pertaining to Outsourcing, Technology and Confidentiality, and Technology and Client Development, among others. More information about the ABA Commission on Ethics 20/20 is available here.

About Justice Elizabeth Lacy
Justice Elizabeth Lacy has served on the Virginia Supreme Court since 1989, becoming Senior Justice in 2007. She previously served as Judge with the Virginia State Corporation Commission and Deputy Attorney General in the Judicial Affairs Division. Justice Lacy is also a professor of Judicial Studies at the University of Richmond School of Law, and a former chair of the ABA Section on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar. Philip B. Blank Memorial Lecture on Attorney Ethics
The Philip B. Blank Memorial Lecture on Attorney Ethics was established to recognize the commitment to legal ethics of the late Philip B. Blank, Associate Dean for External Affairs and Professor of Law at Pace Law School. Dean Blank was a member of the Law School’s faculty from 1979 until his death in 1989. He taught courses in Professional Responsibility, Wills, Estate Planning and Legal Methods.
Past Blank lecturers include James B. Comey, U.S. Attorney, Southern District of New York; Robert J. Grey Jr., American Bar Association President; Alvin J. Bronstein, Esq., Pace Law School Practitioner-in-Residence; and The Honorable Roger J. Miner, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
