Feb. 28: Iona Prep Human Rights Club to Host Assyrian Filmmaker
Free screening and Q&A session with filmmaker Helma Adde highlights plight of Assyrians struggling to survive in Iraq and Syria
The Iona Preparatory Human Rights Club will host a free screening and Q&A session with filmmaker Helma Adde, whose documentary, “Our Last Stand,” reveals the plight of Assyrians struggling to survive in Iraq and Syria. The event will take place on February 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Iona Prep Upper School Heffernan Gymnasium, located at 255 Wilmot Road in New Rochelle. Light refreshments will be provided.
Senior Matthew Multari has been instrumental in bringing the screening to Iona Prep, saying the film raises important awareness about the plight of Christian communities threated by civil war and ISIS. “At Iona Prep, we are taught to live and lead with compassion – not just in school, but around the world. I hope this film will inspire people and bring about positive change for all those who are suffering abroad.”
Adde teaches fourth grade at Birchwood Elementary School in Long Island. Born in Chicago, her upbringing was always tightly wound around her Assyrian heritage. In July 2015, she journeyed to Northern Iraq and Southeastern Syria to make the film, which was released in 2016. Since then, she has been hosting screenings at political and educational institutions across the country to create awareness and inspire policy makers to make decisions for the betterment of Assyrians in the Middle East.
