Folk-Blues Artist Josh White, Jr. Performs in White Plains

Singer-songwriter, actor, teacher and social activist Josh White, Jr. brings his powerful bluesy voice to the Walkabout Coffeehouse Dec. 13

Singer-songwriter, actor, teacher, recording artist and social activist Josh White, Jr. brings his powerful bluesy voice and collection of folk, blues, pop and jazz songs to the Walkabout Clearwater Coffeehouse in White Plains on Saturday, December 13. Walkabout’s monthly concerts are held at the Memorial United Methodist Church, 250 Bryant Avenue in White Plains, NY. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $18 in advance online, $23 at the door, $15 at the door with a student I.D. and $10 for children 6-12. At 6:45 p.m. the Walkabout Clearwater Chorus holds an informal audience sing-along. The Coffeehouse is family friendly, smoke-free and alcohol-free. Refreshments are available both before the show and during intermission. There is plenty of free parking.

Josh White, Jr. was born in NYC in 1940 and began performing and recording with his famous blues-playing father at the age of four. In addition to numerous appearances at concert halls and colleges worldwide, he has appeared in dozens of TV and Broadway productions and regularly conducts educational programs for school-aged children. A typical Josh White, Jr. concert includes some of his father’s best-known works such as “One Meatball” and “House of the Rising Sun” along with an eclectic sampling of traditional folk, blues, pop, jazz and originals. He has produced nearly twenty recordings. During the height of folk music’s popularity in the 1960s, he was a fixture at folk festivals alongside contemporaries like Pete Seeger, Odetta, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Joan Baez, Bob Gibson and Tom Paxton. Josh White, Sr. was a pioneer in bringing African American music to white audiences, helping to integrate the music business and was the first black musician to have a million-seller commercial hit (One Meatball in 1944).

Founded by Pete Seeger, Walkabout Clearwater is a not-for-profit outreach organization dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and social action through song, education and other activities. Walkabout Clearwater is a chartered member-club of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, and all activities - including a people’s chorus and a coffeehouse - support the work of its parent organization.
