Innovative Program Honors Percy Grainger’s Legacy Through Sound

As the Percy Grainger Society continues to celebrate the enduring impact of Percy Grainger on music and culture, we are excited to share the latest developments in the Grainger Library of Sampled Sounds (GLOSS) program. This innovative initiative, designed to create an accessibleand engaging online resource for neurodivergent musicians, particularly those on the autism spectrum, has made significant strides since its beginning in 2020. The recent Members’ Meeting, October 17, provided a platform to discuss these advancements and the future direction of the project.

A Vision for Inclusion
The GLOSS program was initiated several years ago with the objective of developing a rich
repository of sound recordings from the Percy Grainger Home & Studio at 7 Cromwell Place inWhite Plains, New York. By focusing on neurodivergent composers, sound artists, and
musicians, GLOSS aims to provide tailored resources that accommodate their unique cognitive
profiles and creative needs.

Key Components of the GLOSS Initiative
In preparation for the ongoing development of GLOSS, several key components have been
addressed during 2024:
*Accessibility and Usability Reviews: An initial review of the existing GLOSS website highlighted
some non-compliance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Addressing these issues is
vital for creating an inclusive environment that welcomes all users.
*User Needs Analysis: Understanding the diverse preferences within the autistic community has
been fundamental to the project. This analysis emphasizes the need for a design that
accommodates various cognitive profiles, ensuring that GLOSS is accessible and engaging for
all users.
*Development Proposals: The program has put forth various proposals for enhancing the site
interactivity and functionality. These include introducing new interactive design elements and
expanding the library of sound samples to provide a richer experience for users.
*Outreach Strategies: To maximize engagement, we are establishing partnerships with autism-
focused organizations and leveraging social media to promote GLOSS. Engaging the broader
community is essential for fostering collaboration and creativity.
*User Profiles: The GLOSS program categorizes potential users into three distinct profiles: non-
musicians seeking simple interactions; average musicians looking for novel experiences; and
experienced digital musicians requiring advanced functionality. Tailoring offerings to these
profiles is crucial for reaching a wider audience.

Recent Updates Explained at the Members’ Meeting
During our recent members’ meeting on October 17, we held the inaugural event of our series titled Sanctuary, Shelter, Stage: Exploring the Percy Grainger Home & Studio. This event served as an opportunity to provide updates on our progress in honoring Percy Grainger’s spirit of innovation through sound, particularly via the GLOSS program.
Attendees were informed about the recent developments in GLOSS and how the initiative is being
updated and extended in further directions. The meeting fostered a sense of community and
encouraged dialogue about how we can continue to promote Grainger’s legacy in contemporary
contexts.
Professor Andrew Hugill, the Percy Grainger Society Project Consultant for GLOSS, shared insights
from his recent report, which outlines the progress made since the project’s inception. Hugill’s expertise in music and technology, along with his personal experience as an autistic musician, brings a unique perspective to the initiative. He expressed his enthusiasm for GLOSS, stating, “This resource has the potential to inspire a new generation of composers and sound artists, offering a platform for sonic exploration and innovation.”
Paul Jackson, President of the Percy Grainger Society, wholeheartedly agrees, and supports the vision of the GLOSS program, commenting that “our mission is to ensure that Percy Grainger's innovative spirit continues to thrive in modern contexts. By providing accessible resources for neurodivergent musicians, we honor his legacy and empower diverse voices in the musical landscape.”
