Latimer Bans Gun Shows On County Property

The newly sworn-in county executive signed an executive order to implement the ban.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — Newly installed Westchester County Executive George Latimer made good on one of his campaign promises Tuesday by signing an executive order that bans gun shows at all county-owned properties. The move doesn’t ban gun shows on private property in the county.

Latimer signed the order in the lobby of the County Center in White Plains, saying that he believed that location was the wrong venue for a gun show, the Journal News said.

“Westchester County government should not be in the business of advancing the sale of weapons and other items often sold at gun shows — plain and simple,” said Latimer in a prepared statement. “This is not a restriction on gun shows in the entire county, but rather just on public land.”

Text from the Executive Order states that “WHEREAS, reactional County facilities always serve our residents best when used for sporting events, concerts, trade shows, and educational opportunities for our youth. Gun shows are not what taxpayer financed property should be used for.”

County Legislators passed a bill that banned gun shows by a 9-8 vote Jan. 9, 2017. Then-County Executive Robert Astorino vetoed the legislation, and there were insufficient votes to override. it.
