Letter To The Editor: NY Wisely Raises Age Of Tobacco Purchase
The author of this letter is the program manager for the American Lung Association in New York.
I am writing to congratulate Governor Cuomo and our local representatives for raising the age of sale of all tobacco products — including electronic cigarettes — from 18 to 21 throughout the state. This is truly a milestone to celebrate as we work towards educating decision makers, preventing youth tobacco use and improving the health and wellness of younger generations.
Much thanks to our local Westchester county leadership for their willingness to listen and be educated on the dangers of youth tobacco use. Their action provided a steady foundation for a growing grassroots effort that was finally heard in Albany.
The law undoubtably has life-saving potential. We are well aware that adolescents and young adults are uniquely susceptible to aggressive marketing by tobacco companies and the long-term consequences of tobacco and nicotine addiction. Due to the the rise of easily concealable and fruit flavored electronic tobacco products, Tobacco 21 has never been more important. Thanks to this law, the children of New York are better protected from the dangers of tobacco.

Tobacco 21 will reduce youth exposure to nicotine. We know that young adults are vulnerable to the effects of nicotine and nicotine addiction, making this legislation an important, lifesaving measure. Thanks to Governor Cuomo and the New York legislature our children are now less likely to begin a dangerous and life-altering addiction.

New York State’s reduced smoking rates save on healthcare costs and prevent tobacco-related death and disease among some of our most vulnerable residents. We are eager to celebrate the enactment of this law in November and look forward to continuing to educate decision makers on the tobacco epidemic, while seeing our young people reap the rewards.
