Lowey, House Democratic Women Call for End to Trump Shutdown
Members urge Republicans to work with Democrats on the bipartisan priorities of the American people.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY17/Rockland-Westchester), Ranking Member on the House Appropriations Committee, on Sunday joined fellow House Democratic Women Members in the U.S. Capitol to call on the Republican majority to put an end to the dangerous Republican government shutdown and to work with Democrats on the bipartisan priorities of the American people.
"It is important to remember why we are here in the first place: the Republican majority’s shocking mismanagement of the budget and appropriations process and inability to get its work done," said Congresswoman Lowey. "Four months into the fiscal year, the majority has failed to enact a single Appropriations bill into law because they have failed to work with Democrats on spending levels for defense and nondefense investments."

"Democrats have been clear: increases in defense spending should be matched dollar-for-dollar with increases in domestic investments," Lowey added. "Women and families have the most to gain from if we acknowledge domestic investments are as important as those we make in the Pentagon."
The federal government shut down midnight Friday after lawmakers failed to reach an agreement on a spending bill. This is the first shutdown in modern history when one party has controlled the House, Senate, and White House.
