Mount Vernon City School District, in partnership with ArtsWestchester, is the proud recipient of its second federal grant for an innovative program, Project TEAMS, which represents the convergence of STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – with the arts to create STEAM. The program, which will be introduced into four Mount Vernon elementary schools, is designed to pair teachers in these schools with ArtsWestchester’s teaching artists, with the goal of integrating the arts with the core curricula.
Even students who are generally unmotivated by academic study often become active learners when the arts are used as an instructional tool. These teachers will be provided with intensive professional development workshops, and have the opportunity to visit Westchester’s cultural resources to explore ways in which they may utilize exhibitions and cultural programs to advance students’ education.
