On March 12, 2014 in the Federal Courthouse in Manhattan, Froilan Hernandez was sentenced to 30 months in prison for conspiracy to receive stolen mail, receipt of stolen mail, conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and conspiracy to commit identification document fraud.  He was ordered to make restitution of $379,343.

Hernandez participated in a scheme to file false tax returns seeking millions of dollars in false refunds through the use of Puerto Rican social security numbers, with co-conspirators Mariolys Luis de Vargas, Jose Luis Luis Jose, Juan Lecler DeJesus and Dionisio Castro Luis.  The conspirators stole the refund checks from the mail and cashed them or sold the checks to others.
