Sexual Assault Reported In Stairwell At Downtown Mall, Suspect Taken Into Custody: Police

WHITE PLAINS, NY — The White Plains Police Department says that it is investigating a sexual assault at the City Center.

On Tuesday, around 10:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of an assault in a stairwell at the City Center. The victim has been identified as a 20-year-old Westchester resident. She was taken to the hospital for medical attention and support services.
Police say the suspect, a 22-year-old man from Queens, was apprehended by officers.

It is currently unclear if the victim and the suspect were known to one another prior to the incident, according to police.
Detectives from the White Plains Criminal Investigations Division are still reviewing video surveillance footage from the area, processing evidence, and looking into the circumstances surrounding the assault. They are also working closely with the Westchester County District Attorney's Office, officials said.
Police say the White Plains City Center is cooperating in the ongoing investigation.
"The White Plains Police Department remains committed to the safety of our community and visitors," police said in a release. "No further details are being released at this time to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation and the privacy of the victim."
