Westchester Legislators to Vote on Banning Gun Shows at County-Owned Property

County Executive Robert Astorino would likely veto any legislation.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — There could be a full vote on blocking an upcoming gun show at the Westchester County Center next week.

Members of three committees made the recommendation for a bill prohibiting gun shows on county-owned property, and if passed County Executive Rob Astorino is likely to veto it, the Journal News said.

Legislator Virginia Perez, chairwoman of the Board of Legislators Legislation Committee, said she would be voting in favor of the proposed legislation to ban gun shows at the Westchester County Center.

She said that 10 years ago her younger brother was shot and killed in a public housing building stairwell in Yonkers while he was working as a food delivery person.

“I will also vote in favor of the proposed local law to adopt guidelines by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to regulate the sale of weapons at gun shows throughout Westchester County,” Perez said.

Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner said gun shows haven’t been held at the County Center since the Sandy Hook killings four years ago.

“People have the right to purchase guns — that’s the second amendment — but those who support gun shows at the County Center don’t think the county should encourage the culture of guns,” he said.

Feiner pointed out that the proposed ban would prohibit gun shows at privately owned conference centers.

The Legislature is scheduled to vote on the proposed ban at 7 p.m. Jan. 9 at the eighth-floor of the County Office Building.
