White Plains Hospital Receives National Outstanding Achievement Award from American College of Surgeons' Commission on Canc

Award recognizes excellence in providing highest quality care to cancer patients

White Plains Hospital has been presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). White Plains Hospital is one of a select group of only 23 U.S. health care facilities with accredited cancer programs to receive this national honor. The award acknowledges cancer programs that achieve excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients.

The White Plains Hospital Cancer Program first received CoC accreditation when it opened in 1993 and has maintained continuous approval since that time; attaining commendation status continuously since 2006.

The intent of the Outstanding Achievement Award is to raise awareness of the importance of providing quality cancer care at health care institutions throughout the U.S. In addition, it is intended to:

According to Una Hopkins, DNP, Administrative Director of the Cancer Program at White Plains Hospital, “We are honored to be recognized yet again by the Commission on Cancer. The Outstanding Achievement Award reflects the exceptional multidisciplinary care that our team – including expert physicians (surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists), specialized Magnet nurses, social workers, registered dietitians, palliative care managers, spiritual counselors, navigators and integrative medicine nurses – provides to all our patients. We pride ourselves on caring for each person, as well as his or her family, in a highly individualized way, at every step along the cancer journey.”

White Plains Hospital’s Cancer Program has received many accolades that reflect the Hospital’s commitment to outstanding patient care. Current and prior recognitions include: accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC); Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and Lung Cancer Screening Center Designation from the American College of Radiology (ACR); Women’s Choice Awards as one of America’s Best Breast Centers and one of America’s Best Hospitals for Cancer Care; and CEO Cancer Gold Standard Accreditation.

White Plains Hospital’s Cancer Program was evaluated on 34 program standards categorized within one of four cancer program activity areas: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, and quality improvement. The cancer program was further evaluated on seven commendation standards. The program received commendation ratings in all seven commendation standards, in addition to receiving a compliance rating for each of the 27 other standards.
