Yankees Legend Mariano Rivera Honored by Latino College Group

Westchester-based Latino U College Access is a nonprofit that works to increase college enrollment and completion rates among Latino youth.

New York Yankees legend Mariano Rivera, and his wife Clara, recently were honored at Latino U College Access’ 3rd Annual Benefit, “Visiones: Making College Dreams a Reality.”

The couples’ non-profit organization, The Mariano Rivera Foundation (www.marianoriverafoundation.org) was given the Community Partner Award in recognition of their “generosity and support in providing scholarships to Latino U Scholars” as the students begin their first year of college. The gala was held last week at CV Rich Mansion in White Plains.

“We are honored to present Mr. and Mrs. Rivera with the Community Partner Award for their support of our scholars,” said Shirley Acevedo Buontempo, Executive Director of Westchester-based Latino U College Access, in a statement. “The Mariano Rivera Foundation is dedicated to working today to build a better tomorrow and that aligns beautifully with Latino U’s mission to increase college enrollment and completion rates among Latino youth to ensure the success of future generations.”

The cocktail reception and benefit celebrated the dreams and aspirations of the many talented Latino youth in the Westchester community who dream of being the first in their families to go to college. “Visiones” highlighted Latino U’s many programs and services that aim to inform, guide, and support students and their families as they begin their journey to a college education.

Latino U helps students and families with college planning, financial aid resources and support in their communities and schools. Programs such as bilingual Community Information Sessions, SAT/ACT Prep, FAFSA Boot Camps, College Coaching and Mentoring programs help guide students through the complex process of college admissions and financial aid. These programs can make all the difference in the options and opportunities accessible to a low-income, first-generation student.
