Gas Main Explodes At Williamsburg Construction Site: FDNY

Firefighters advised people to avoid the area near Kent Avenue and Broadway as they work to put out a fire on a construction site.

WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — Firefighters said a fire that broke out on a construction site almost under control by about noon on Tuesday, but warned people to avoid the area.

Around 11:15 a.m. emergency responders were sent to the construction site on the corner of Broadway and Kent Avenue, where a gas main had ruptured and burst into flames, FDNY officials said. Three people suffered non-life threatening injuries because of the flames, officials later said.

By about noon the incident was almost under control. The National Grid emergency crew was on scene to make any repairs necessary to the gas main, officials said.

Fire officials were not sure if the road had been officially closed down, but said people should probably avoid the area until the incident is cleared.

The city's emergency notification system also sent out an alert about the fire.

"Expect smoke & traffic delays in area," the alert read. "People nearby avoid smoke, close windows."
