Greenpoint Avenue G-Train Closures Start This Weekend, MTA

GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN -- The L train won't be the only one getting in on the construction fun this winter. MTA has announced a series of shutdowns to the G train schedule, too, as workers start "round-the-clock" accessibility upgrades and begin preparing the line for when the L shuts down this spring.

The work is the next phase of a project that aims to bring full accessibility to the Greenpoint Avenue station and is part of a five-year plan to make subway stations more accessible for the disabled. The service changes will also let workers do track maintenance on the line to ensure reliability during the tunnel reconstruction project that will begin in April, officials said.

The Greenpoint project will install three new elevators and update infrastructure including stairs, handrails, turnstiles, powered gates and braille signage.

One of the elevators will link the southern end of the station mezzanine to the sidewalk on the east side of Manhattan Avenue between Greenpoint Avenue and Kent Street. Two other elevators will provide access to the northbound and southbound platforms, respectively, from the station mezzanine, according to MTA officials.

The station agent booth will also be modified to a wheelchair user-friendly height.

Here's how the work will impact service:

• From 945 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30 to 5 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 31, only northbound trains will stop at Greenpoint Av.
• The Greenpoint Av station will be closed in both directions on weeknights between 9:45 p.m. and 5 a.m. and on weekends at all hours from Monday, Dec. 3 to Monday, Dec. 24.
• Alternate service during the closures will be as follows:
  • Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 -- free shuttle buses between Court Sq. and Nassau Av.
  • Dec. 3 to 7 -- free shuttle buses between 21 St-Queensbridge and Bedford-Nostrand Avs.
  • Dec. 7 to 10 -- free shuttle buses between Nassau Av. and Corut Sq.
  • Dec. 10 to 14 -- free shuttle buses between 21 St-Queensbridge and Bedford-Nostrand Avs.
  • Dec. 14 to 17 -- free shuttle buses between Court Sq. and Bedford-Nostrand Avs.
  • Dec. 17 to 21 -- free shuttle buses between 21 St-Queensbridge and Bedford-Nostrand Avs.
  • Dec. 21 to 24 -- free shuttle buses between Court Sq. and Bedford-Nostrand Avs.
  • Jan. 4 to 7 -- free shuttle buses between Bedford-Nostrand Avs. and Jay St.
