'Haunted' Williamsburg Bistro Shut Down By Health Inspectors

Sweetwater Bistro, a restaurant staffers believe is haunted by a dead woman, was shut down by inspectors who reported live mice.

WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — A “haunted” bistro reportedly built on a Williamsburg burial ground was shut down by health inspectors on Wednesday, city records show.

Sweetwater Bistro, a restaurant whose staff told the New York Times is haunted by the North Sixth Street building’s former owner — was shut down on Dec. 6 when health inspectors found evidence of mice and dangerously tepid food.

During its Wednesday inspection, the Williamsburg eatery earned 41 points — enough to earn a C rating and close monitoring from the city's health department.

The inspectors did not report any signs of haunting.

Bistro employees told the New York Times in 2o14 that a ghost named Anna Smith, whom they blamed for problems in the restaurant that include broken glasses, flickering lights and the feeling of being watched.

The manager at the time, Wesley Ham, said workers who unearthed a small animal and a Madonna figurine buried in the basement inspired the ghost’s wrath.

“I thought the ghost was not happy about its possessions being taken from the floor,” he said.

Sweetwater, a go-to favorite in the neighborhood since it opened in 2004, had reopened for business by Monday afternoon.

The restaurant did not immediately respond to Patch's request for comment.
