WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — Firefighters worked to control a manhole fire Thursday afternoon that erupted on Manhattan Avenue, fire officials said.

FDNY was called to 143 Manhattan Ave. around 2:40 p.m. for reports that a manhole fire had broken out in on the street out front, an FDNY spokesman said. A car was parked on top of the manhole.

Crews were still on the scene about an hour later and were waiting for Con Edison to arrive, the spokesman said.
