Statue Honoring NY Immigrants Called 'Turd' In NY Post Report
The statue, Ziemia, honors "each individual's migratory experience." The New York Post reported it looked like "a giant turd."

GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN — Ceci n’est pas une poop.
A new orb-shaped soil sculpture that celebrates Brooklyn’s immigrant community appeared in McGolrick Park earlier this month, and the New York Post was quick to compare it to another brown formation.
“Brooklynites question artist’s ‘giant turd’ in middle of park,” the New York Post’s headline read.

“Gotta love the @nypost,” the artist, Martynka Wawrziak, responded on Instagram, adding in two emojis of a smiling feces and a thumbs up. “#highclassreporting.”
Ziemia, or “Earth” in Polish, is a gift from the Polish Cultural Institute on the centennial of Poland’s independence after World War I that honors the diverse communities that coexist in Brooklyn, according to the artist.

The soil was collected by Greenpoint residents in the U.S., Poland, Ukraine, Germany, France, Japan, Serbia, Nepal, the United Kingdom, Ecuador, Mexico, and Namibia, then added to Wawrziak's 30-pound orb, according to Wawrziak.
"Ziemia gestures to the primal connection to Earth that underlies each individual’s migratory experience," she wrote on her website. "As the transitionary phase in nature between death and life, soil refers to the cyclical patterns of neighborhood growth and change."
But the New York Post reported that several Greenpoint residents take umbrage with the new statue, and that one woman called it a “giant turd.”
Tom Barker added, according to the Post, “Or like a ball of dung that a dung beetle has collected.”
The artist shared the Post's coverage on Sunday, when it was published and her followers quickly began sending out words of encouragement.
"Excellent!" wrote francestulkhart. "You flying with the big times now."
"I wish I turded like that," Yourstruly_cacaojenny wrote.
Cherryvintagenyc concluded succinctly, "S---HAPPENS."
The statue will be on display until June 2019.
