George Washington ES Opens New STEAM Education Lab

Room Will Provide Opportunities In Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math

It was full STEAM ahead at George Washington Elementary School recently as George Washington Elementary School students began using their new lab.

First grade classes at the school had the opportunity to visit the newly opened STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) lab and were challenged to build a house with a roof strong enough to support at a pumpkin in 12 minutes. Danielle Colasante’s first grade class enthusiastically took the challenge. Instructional Coaches Lisa Barlow and Brianna Straut, STEAM advisors, were on hand to explain the lesson to the students and what materials (pattern blocks, Legos, Keva blocks, and base ten blocks) they would be using. The students worked in teams, and each team’s roof was strong enough to support a pumpkin.

Throughout the year kindergarten through fifth grade students will have the opportunity to visit the STEAM lab for hands-on learning using a variety of tools. Students engage in solving problems, working in a team, trying different solutions, analyzing data, and communicating effectively and using imagination and curiosity to solve age appropriate challenges.
