Car Crash Leads To Accusation Of Drunken Driving

Police said the man refused to take a breath test.

YORKTOWN, NY — A Yorktown man was accused of driving while intoxicated after crashing into a utility pole. Yorktown police said Sylvester Salzano, 56, of Yorktown, was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, misdemeanors, as well as multiple traffic violations including refusal to take a breath test, open container of alcohol and speed not reasonable or prudent.

According to police, around 9 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a report of a one-car crash involving a downed utility pole and downed live power lines on the car and in the road.

Salzano was identified as the driver and he was trapped in the vehicle. He was removed from the car and taken to Hudson Valley Hospital for medical treatment.

An investigation found that Salzano was driving while intoxicated and he refused to take a breath test.

Police said he had two open containers of alcohol in the car and was speeding without concern for the weather or road conditions.

Salzano went to the Yorktown Police Department shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday and was arrested.
After being processed, he was issued traffic tickets for the charges and was released on his own recognizance.

Salzano is scheduled to appear in the Yorktown Justice Court May 19.
