Carmel, N.Y. (September 1, 2022) – Civil Air Patrol (CAP) members from the Putnam County Composite Squadron stepped up to support the New York International Air Show held at the Orange County Airport, in Montgomery, NY on August 27-28, 2022. CAP, which is the auxiliary of the US Air Force, is a volunteer organization with both cadet and adult senior members who receive training in various areas, including emergency services.

Squadron members assisted air show security by making sure gate personnel had extra support, event boundaries were secure and guests were directed to the proper viewing locations. The event was a success, and the Putnam County Squadron was asked to return for the 2023 air show.

An air show is always an exciting event, especially at this awe-inspiring demonstration of flying skills in a wide variety of aircraft. The Civil Air Patrol, as an auxiliary of the US Air Force, provides pilot training for interested cadets and senior members, making the airshow an opportunity for aerospace education for all. With a pilot shortage seen in the government and private sectors, there is a desperate need for trained pilots, giving CAP membership a unique path to those wishing to fly. CAP has the largest fleet of Cessna aircraft in the world and as an auxiliary of the US Air Force the opportunities are endless.

Established in 1941, Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and as such is a member of its Total Force. In its auxiliary role, CAP operates a fleet of 555 single-engine aircraft and 2,250 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) and performs about 90% of all search and rescue operations within the contiguous United States as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Often using innovative cellphone forensics and radar analysis software, CAP was credited by the AFRCC with saving 108 lives last year. CAP’s 58,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. As a nonprofit organization, CAP plays a leading role in aerospace education using national academic standards-based STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education resources. Members also serve as mentors to over 24,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs.
