Cortlandt Manor Man Accused Of Burglary, Having Weapon

Police said he used a pickaxe to break into the home.

YORKTOWN, NY — A Cortlandt Manor resident was accused of burglarizing a Yorktown home. Yorktown police charged John B. Tompkins, 39, of Cortlandt Manor, with first-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief, felonies, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor.

Police said, around 7 a.m. Aug. 29, officers were sent to a Yorktown residence for a report of a possible burglary.

An investigation found Tompkins broke into the home using a pickaxe, police said, damaging the front door and a couch, which were valued at $4,000.

He was located a short distance from the residence and was arrested, police said.

Tompkins was processed on the charges and arraigned by a judge who issued an order of protection on behalf of the victims.

He was turned over to the custody of the Westchester County Department of Corrections after being unable to post either $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond.

Tompkins is scheduled to appear next in Yorktown Justice Court Sept. 5.
