Cuomo Extends School Closures To April 15 [POLL]
The closures will be reassessed in two weeks. Should the decision be made now to keep schools closed for the rest of the year?
NEW YORK, NY — All around the state, children were counting down the days until they could return to their schools, having been told by Gov. Andrew Cuomo originally that classes could resume April 1. On Friday, however, the governor announced that, because the state is now projecting to see peak hospitalizations because of the new coronavirus in 14 to 21 days, all New York schools would remain closed for a little longer.
Cuomo said that New York schools would be closed until at least April 15.
He said after the two weeks, officials will reassess the whether schools can reopen.

That puts schools in the position of extending distance learning and continuing child care for essential workers and food distribution for students who depend on their schools to provide meals.
For some schools, the extension coincides with spring break.

The Levittown school district said that its spring break is scheduled for April 13 to April 17, so school will reopen Monday, April 20.
Students in the New Rochelle district will be taking spring break from April 6 through April 10.
Superintendent Dr. Laura Feijóo said that food distribution will continue throughout the district for those students who need it.
"During the break, we urge you to rest, rejuvenate and spend time spent with family," she said.
In Poughkeepsie, public school students were supposed to take spring break from April 6 through April 10. However, because the governor added the two weeks to the closure, spring break will now take place from April 10 through April 17 and schools are slated to reopen April 20.
All of that, of course, is contingent upon whether schools actually open after April 15 or the governor makes another extension.
With all the uncertainty over the new coronavirus, and how long we might have to deal with it, should schools go ahead and commit to being closed through June?
