First Snowfall Estimates Announced For Thursday In Hudson Valley

Depending on your location, there could be snow, sleet, rain or a wintry mix.

The National Weather Service has just released its first snow accumulation estimates for the Hudson Valley for Thursday and Friday.

Snow and sleet are expected to begin Thursday morning for the lower Hudson Valley. Up to 4 inches of snow is in the forecast, the NWS said.

For the mid-Hudson Valley, there is a chance of snow Thursday evening, snow then sleet Thursday night and sleet turning to rain and snow Friday. Total precipitation will be up to 2 inches.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for Orange, Putnam, Rockland and northern Westchester, calling for a couple of inches of snow, followed by a light glaze of freezing rain Thursday afternoon into Friday morning.

Here's the forecast for Putnam County through the end of the week from the NWS:

  • Tuesday Night: Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 27. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Northwest wind around 11 mph.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 36. Wind chill values between 15 and 25. Northwest wind 10 to 13 mph.
  • Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 17. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the evening.
  • Thursday: A chance of snow between 1pm and 4pm, then snow and sleet. High near 31. Wind chill values between 15 and 25. East wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.
  • Thursday Night: Snow, freezing rain, and sleet before 7pm, then freezing rain and sleet between 7pm and 4am, then freezing rain after 4am. Temperature rising to around 32 by 4am. Northeast wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.
  • Friday: Rain, mainly before 10am. High near 40. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 28.
